What is the Mainline?

The Main Line is an exclusive collection of suburbs west of Philadelphia in Chester, Delaware and Montgomery counties. Strategically located along a stretch of a historic Pennsylvania railroad, these towns flourished along with the railway route. Some of the wealthiest communities in the country reside along the Main Line. Residents of these picturesque towns and villages enjoy a high quality of life. Many of the enormous country estates and regal mansions that were built by Philadelphia’s wealthiest families during the 19th century continue to dot the rolling hills and the open meadows along the Schuylkill River.

Main Line History

During the 1800s, many affluent Philadelphians began seeking alternative living arrangements, wishing to leave the blistering heat of the city for a cooler country climate. Because of its close proximity to the city and its convenience, they ultimately settled upon the less populated regions just outside the city. As populations along the Main Line grew during the early 19th century, so did the construction of the Main Line Railroad into the surrounding metro areas of Philadelphia

Historically, communities extending northwest from the city of Philadelphia, and along the Main Line became station stops which included Overbrook, Merion, Narberth, Wynnewood, Ardmore, Haverford, Bryn Mawr, Rosemont, Villanova, Radnor, St. Davids, Wayne, Strafford, Devon, Berwyn, Daylesford, and Paoli. The railroad conveniently placed these stops two minutes apart.

As the railway continued its progress into the country side, it eventually reached the major stations of Lancaster, Harrisburg and Pittsburgh until it joined the railway system of Chicago. The railway has since changed hands (it now belongs to Amtrak), but it continues to service communities today. The SEPTA R5 rail line provides service that connects the Main Line communities with Philadelphia every day.

Besides, when you don’t feel like driving, the available SEPTA R5 rail line can get you there quickly. If you’re looking for a bigger city scene, New York City and DC is a little over 100 miles away. When nothing but a weekend getaway with family will do, the Jersey shore and the Poconos Mountains are just two hours away.
